Sponsorship

What is Synod sponsorship?

Synod sponsorship means the official approval and recommendation granted by the Governing Board, i.e., Theological Education Board (TEB) of the Mizoram Presbyterian Synod, to a person undertaking any level of theological studies.

Conditions for Granting Synod Sponsorship

1. Financial Support for Deputed Synod Workers shall be awarded by the Governing Board after considering the academic records and character of the candidates and the needs of the church.

2. Various categories of scholarship shall be awarded to the applicants as per the discretion of the Governing Board.

3. For the continuation of any scholarship in subsequent years of study, the scholarship holders would be required to maintain at least a C+ average in their studies, and the confidential reports from their respective colleges should be satisfactory.

4. Synod sponsorship as well as financial support granted to any candidate shall be withdrawn at any time during the course of studies if he/she fails to abide by the standards and directives of the Governing Board.

5. Candidates who have not been granted Synod sponsorship for a particular course of studies can, however, apply for Synod sponsorship to undertake another course of theological studies.

6. Subsequent applications for scholarships from candidates who had earlier sought Synod sponsorship without financial support, and from private candidates will not be entertained by the Governing Board after the candidates have completed one year or more in a particular course of studies.

7. Candidates receiving minimum or medium scholarship may apply to the Governing Board for a higher category of scholarship after one year or more of theological studies. They shall have to provide sufficient justification for the same. The Governing Board, after due consideration, may or may not grant such requests.

Types of Synod Sponsorship

There are three types of Synod sponsorship:

1. Sponsorship for Deputed Synod Workers:
This sponsorship shall be granted to any full-time Synod worker who is officially deputed to undergo theological studies.

2. Sponsorship with Financial Support:
This sponsorship shall be granted to any candidate other than deputed full-time Synod Workers selected by the TEB on the basis of a written examination and/or interview for undertaking any level of theological studies in any college or seminary affiliated to the Senate of Serampore College within the country.

3. Sponsorship without Financial Support:
This sponsorship shall be granted to candidates desirous of pursuing theological studies at their own expense without expecting any financial support from the Synod. Such candidates will be selected by the Governing Board on the basis of a written test and/or interview.

Even Synod full-time workers, desirous of undertaking theological studies at their own expense, can apply for this kind of Synod sponsorship.

Categories of Financial Support

The College offers different categories of financial support. These categories of assistance or scholarship may be granted not only to candidates receiving type 1 or 2 of Synod Sponsorship, but also to candidates sponsored by other church bodies. There are four kinds of financial support:

1. Financial Support for Deputed Synod Workers:
Full-time Synod workers who have been deputed by the Synod will be entitled to receive their salaries and other financial assistance as per the Synod Service Rules.

2. Maximum Scholarship/Category I scholarship:
This scholarship shall cover all the College and hostel fees, including mess fee, pocket money, medical fees, book grant, thesis grant, field education fee and travel (to and from the College of study at the beginning and end of every academic year).

In the case of married students who plan to live in the College family quarters, the maximum scholarship would cover all college fees and charges for family quarters. They will be entitled to receive mess fee, pocket money, medical allowance and travel allowance (to and from the College at the beginning and end of the course) for their spouses as well. No allowance is given for their children.

3. Medium Scholarship/Category II Scholarship:
This scholarship shall cover fees (such as College registration and examination, tuition, field education, sports, magazine and association fees), hostel fees and mess fees. It shall not cover pocket money, book grant, and thesis grant.

In the case of married students who plan to live in the College family quarters, this scholarship shall cover only college fees, family quarter’s charges and double mess fee.

4. Minimum Scholarship/Category III Scholarship:
This scholarship shall cover mess fee only. All other expenses will be borne by the candidate. In the case of married students who plan to live in college family quarters, minimum scholarship implies a grant of double mess fee only.
